They existed in ancient Greece and Rome. In Europe they were promulgated until the 18th century. We had them also in the Japanese Edo period. They are called sumptuary laws. If we analyse these laws we can get a detailed picture of the daily life of the common people of those times. Thus it will be possible to write a history of medieval and modern societies through the sumptuary laws. But first we must study thoroughly the contents, purposes and motives of these laws. Therefore in my introduction to this thesis I will outline the sumptuary laws first. However, bearing in mind the continuous changes these laws have undergone and the variations in the sumptuary laws of the different societies it is the intention to ignore the minor differences of the various laws down the ages and make an effort to get them in perspective.}, pages = {35--47}, title = {奢侈条例を通して見るヨーロッパ精神史序論}, volume = {創刊号}, year = {2001}, yomi = {アカサカ, シュンイチ} }
